Think about all the tourists you see in Manhattan and inwardly think that they're easy marks for a local.
Now put yourself in Italy and think about what the locals are thinking.
Enjoy the trip, but always be wary. NEVER go anywhere alone - small groups are better than pairs. Take lots of pictures, but don't flash any cash. You're better off paying for things with credit card if possible. People watch to see the wad of cash you pull out before you leave the store / restaurant / etc.
In Rome, we had a backpack slit open while on a bus, our pockets constantly "bumped" while on the subway, and kids running around us trying to sell everything they had, including each other (I'm not kidding - especially the older brothers with younger sisters).
Stick with the group and enjoy the trip. You'll bring back plenty of great memories and a few lessons learned.
