Agree, start with a good old fashion tune up. Plugs, cap, rotor, wires, fuel filter, spray some carb cleaner and set the timing, check vacuum hoses.
OMG! what type of distributor does it have. You might have to set the dewell on the points. Man it's been allot of years since I had to do that! I bet I still got the tools..... Somewhere... ???
