I actually can't stand recruiters even though I had a decent experience with one recently. I got a call from a recruiter (Aerotek - Technical/Engineering Jobs) about 10 months ago about a job opportunity in NJ looking for someone with my experience. He would not disclose the company name but would only tell me the company is awesome blah blah.
It sounded like a good fit but he first wanted me to interview with him in NYC. I told him very simply, "I'm good at what I do and I'm not going to waste anyones time if you aren't wasting mine". I told him to submit my resume and see how they respond. Sure enough, the company wanted to meet with me and I got the job. The only risk I took was going from a salary job to a contract-to-hire position which worked out well in my case. I am now back on salary and making more than I did before.
1. They will almost never disclose the company because you could go around them and get the job...cutting them out of their money.
2. Don't be afraid to deal directly with the company once you find out who it is. I got lucky and interviewed with one of the company VP's so I was just about at the top and dealt directly with him to get me the job and work out the details.
3. Interviews with the recruiters are fine as long as they are warranted. I really don't see the point of an in person interview unless you like the practice or sound like a dunce on the phone. If you can talk, you should be fine.
The issue now is that a lot of companies may be going to these recruiters to find people only because there are more resumes floating around than ever since a lot of people are looking for work.
Good luck with everything and I hope some of my info helped. Don't waste your time with these people if you don't think its worth it.
