The chains also do not carry full lines of shoes, most only carry one or two actual top models, a few mid lines, and a lot of cheapies.
If you go to a specialty store like Princeton Running Company or Super Runner Shops they will take the time to look at your stride ,the shape of your feet, and find out how you intend to use them to make sure you get the best shoe for your needs.
You will spend a little extra going to a specialty store, but it does make a massive difference once you start stacking on the miles.
