In his case it's a good idea to think about a set- or 9" housing ends. Disc brake calipers can hold an axle in but not in every case.

while it would of helped....there was no way I was going to drive home on a broken axle and tear up what was left of the 10 bolt just to save a tow truck ride. THe caliper held it in and I was able to do a u turn with it after I was dropped off the truck and drove it right into the garage.
