you should be able to see the accelerator pumps spraying the fuel. Sounds like your right in thinking you clogged something during the cleaning. Clean it again see what happens couldn't hurt to flush it one more time.
I personally wouldn't rebuild it i would get a Holley 650 DP. It'll give you better tuning and nice crisp throttle response.
