If you do go with a 2wd you'll have to put weight in the bed for snow. Block, sandbags, whatever. It'll do good though. The 4 cylinder is awesome with gas, and one of the most reliable engines GM has built. The 4.3 is pretty good also, look for the valve guide seal puff on startup. In my opinion, the TBI 4.3 is very reliable. The CPI 4.3 makes a bit more power but has slight issues with the fuel injector spider, fuel pressure regulator, and just in general the entire fuel system. You'd probably be cramped in a regular cab, so an extended cab would probably be best. You might want to consider a ranger also...they are just as reliable as the s10s, they are very similar.
