More to this point-
If you are trying to lose weight, get a good heart rate monitor (such as a Polar) and use that as a "coach" on your wrist. Aim for the lower part of your working heart rate to lose fat, aim for the upper to burn calories/improve cardio fitness. This way you can tell if you are really working hard or if you are wasting your time, and you can regulate your effort to go longer/shorter if you have to.
