Theoretically, the alphabet is something we've known since our earliest days of school (Maybe earlier) so it stands to reason that if you are sober, you are going to be able to recite it, wherever the officer tells you to start and finish. It is also an opportunity to see if you can follow simple directions.
That's why there are tests: To determine whether a suspected violator is truly impaired before going through the traumatic experience of an arrest. Again, glad it worked out for you.

I wouldn't really call it traumatic per se; a lot of the time it can be a much-needed wake up call.
