I keep it on it's side in my TV stand - plenty of space around it, and the shelf is open front and back. I also put small (~3/8") rubber feet on it to get more airflow underneath of it.
Now that my RROD warranty is up, I'm thinking about opening it up to give it a good cleaning inside.

have you tried blowing on the cartridge and whacking the top of the box as hard as you can?
