The motors are different for each side. The bodies are the same, but where the shaft comes out is opposite sides. Im trying to picture how you flipped them but cant.

If it is grinding, then it already chewed up the nylon gear. I would just pop the covers off and flip the gear 180 and put it back in. I normally use JB weld to hold the cover back on.

pull the motors out and see if you can wiggle the worm gear drive against the gear. There are four 90* clips that hold them together. Put the motor in a vice, and light tap on them with a hammer and screwdrive to tighten them up. They will come loose after time. The tq of the motor loosens them. Don't hit it too hard or else you'll punch through the plastic. (Ask me how I know)

Also, make sure the arms that connect them to the headlights aren't backwards, I did the before too and it makes them not go up corrently.

I've done these quite a few times ...
