Try the belt first. I've had several engines start the chirping thing when the backside of the belt gets worn too smooth. I took the AC belt off the SS for over a year because the chirping was annoying and I could never remember to pick up a new one.
If it really is the back of the engine then it will be tougher to diagnose.
