So you have the emmisions on the car? An improperly sealing check valve will make an exhaust leak sound?
Are the rockers on properly? Beveled lip up to seat the lock nut?
Those rockers will work with the old fashion oil deflectors, so you can run the engine with the vavle cover off and not spray oil everywhere. Helpful when looking for this type of noise.

John, out in the garage I still have a SBC valve cover with a slot cut out of it for the same purpouse. Old school.
