To you the '69 Z was always badass - it was already 20 years old when you were born, and the popularity and price were likely already starting to rise at that point. Just like many of the 2nd gens have been experiencing for that last several years, and just like some 3rd gens are now.
Fact of the matter is, the GTA is a relatively rare (approximately 11,200 '88 GTAs out out over 62,000 Firebirds that year) sports car, with only 600 miles on it. It's gonna be pricey. FWIW, there were approximately 20,000 '69 Z28s produced.
