With engine coolant at normal operating temperature, operate engine at fast idle for several minutes. Coolant fan should turn on before coolant temperature indicator lamp lights or coolant gauge reads 218 degrees F. If equipped with A/C, allow engine to operate at low idle, then move A/C function switch to NORM. Coolant fan should operate.
If coolant fan does not operate, check applicable A/C or heater fuses, then turn ignition switch ``On,'' and ground diagnostic terminal B at ALCL. If coolant fan operates, an ECM malfunction is indicated. If coolant fan does not operate, and dark green/white wire is satisfactory, proceed to step 3.
Remove connector from coolant fan relay, then connect a suitable test lamp between connector terminal C and ground. Turn ignition switch ``On.'' If test lamp does not light, check dark blue (351) wire for open and repair as necessary. If test lamp lights, proceed to step 4.
Move test lamp from terminal C to terminal E. If test lamp does not light, check for open in red (2) wire and fusible link D and repair as necessary. Repair as necessary. If test lamp lights, proceed to step 5.
Connect a fused jumper between terminals E and A of coolant fan relay connector. If coolant fan operates, replace relay. If coolant fan does not operate, proceed to step 6.
With fused jumper in place, remove coolant fan connector, and connect a suitable test lamp between terminal A and ground. If test lamp does not light, check black/red (902) wire for open and repair as necessary. If test lamp lights, proceed to step 7.
Move test lamp ground lead to terminal A of coolant fan connector. If test lamp does not light, check black (151) wire for open and repair as necessary. If test lamp lights, replace coolant fan.
If coolant fan operates continuously with ignition switch ``On,'' check for diagnostic code 14 or 15. If code is present, an ECM malfunction is indicated. If no code is present, check dark green/white wire (935) for short and repair as necessary. If wire is satisfactory, replace coolant fan relay.
If coolant fan operates continuously with ignition switch ``Off,'' remove coolant fan relay connector. If coolant fan stops, replace relay. If coolant fan continues to operate, check black/red (902) wire for short and repair as necessary.
