The pre 2005 Tacomas can have frame problems so if you get something older, check the frame closely. Not all of them rot out but you need to check closely. The 3.0 and probably the 3.4 as well need routine maintenance that can be a real pita depending on what it is (PCV valve, timing belt, water pump). The exhaust manifolds on the 3.0 can cause burnt exhaust valves on the driver's side due to the way it wraps around and meets up. I don't know much about the newer 2005 and up so I can't really comment on them.
