Always email/speak to your professor after you get the syllabus and ask if in older edition of the book would work. 4 out of 5 times it will suffice, you will just need to be aware the page numbers don't always match up. Some professors will have a conversion chart for you, others will tell you to find it out on your own. But old editions can be bought for a couple dollars easily.
Chegg and Amazon were my two go-tos in college. Chegg was great for the real textbooks that you needed. And amazon was great for the books and other paperbacks you needed or didn't mind getting an old edition of.
