My parents have an' 04 corolla (202k miles so far) and '05-06 rav4..no issues whatsoever. Worked for Toyota up until '01 (thru college) and they had a quality product w/very little defects back then. The dealership was joint w/vw and vw was half the car yota was back then in terms of reliablility and longevity. Can't comment on the new vehicles as I don't know about them any longer but as far as recalls, it appears toyota haven't been taking any chances on anything from the acceleration debockle and are issuing recalls quickly.
Gm has stepped up their game and is definitely an equal vehicle now-a-days however each vehicle can/does have its share of issues. My '03 is300 had a heated seat issue and headliner falling after 1000miles. My wife's '11 equinox had 2 sets of cam actuators/sensors, a reprogram on the ecu to fix the actuators issues (after mine was diagnosised...under campaign) . This was at after 6-7k miles and I just got it back from gm under warranty for a cracked exhaust manifold at 59k miles...so far the '12 Silverado has been fine for me after 13.5k miles. Bottom line, buy a car and hope for the best as they all
can have issues.
