I drove a friend's TDI Golf for a day, swapped cars so he could take it to service for me, he worked at the dealer where I got the car. Was a very nice refined car, needle didn't move one bit, but it was sorely lacking in the handling department. Then again, I'm spoiled, between the built GTA and the ST with Eagle F1 rubber, that Golf felt very skittish. But had a long commute been a factor, I would have considered a diesel.

Yeah, I'm 39 miles one way against traffic. Basically all highway, no traffic. So TDI was the way to go for economy. Even if I was OK with a hybrid (which I wouldn't be) it wouldn't be optimal since I'd never be braking for regeneration. The Passat handles great. Very well done car. Would probably handle better with wider tires but then again I'm not sacrificing economy for performance I'd rarely use.
