My Saab, purchased in 2012, still has the old blue/white NY plates, whereas my dad's Cadillac, purchased in 2010, has the newer plates. This is because I elected to transfer my plates from my old Saturn instead of getting new ones. In theory, you could do this into perpetuity, I imagine.
