Registration Question?
Is it possible to have the 72 insured, titled and tagged by Sunday? Is there a way to just swap plates from one car to another? I was going to get everything done tomorrow and get the ball rolling, but if there is a way to do this with existing plates, I would like to do so.

Yes, if you can get insurance together that fast. Are you over 25 & have a clean record & a daily driver? Call Hagerty. Get it done in a few hours.
You want QQ plates? Take all the info and pictures and proof of insruance to the Trenton office - they have QQ plates on hand. Check the DMV site, it isn't the regular office.

Ummm... elaborate more... as for insurance, u want it as a DD or a collectable/classic car? Cuz for me to put my Camaro on a new insurance policy (geico)... it took 10 minutes, they sent temporary papers via Email so i can drive it THAT DAY until i got the real card ...
then
Registering my 88 WS6 and adding it to my insurance policy seriously took a total of 45 minutes, most of it being in line at the DMV. They give new plates upon registration.
*Edit* Ok, nvm, see u prolly want QQ plates.

No, I tried Hagerty and the stupid careless driving thing I was pinned with in 04 is killing me.
I am going with Allstate. They can get me up and running tomorrow in an hour no doubt, they did with my Maxx.
Now, I dont want to QQ it, I will register it under normal registration.
If I can get the insurance tomorrow, can I bring plates along with the old Title and whatever cash and get the car ready to go before Sunday?

Are you looking for normal insurance? or Collectors insurance?
*edit* that has no relevance to the situation, all u need is 6 points of indentification (stupid NJ, which is drivers license, birth cert, SS#, and proof of address like bank statement, etc) , your insurance policy #, title, and plates. You should be good to go

Why normal plates? Ugly inspection sticker....
The old plates don't matter. Just bring them in and get a receipt for turning them in. Bring the paperwork (dl, title & insurance, I think) & the checkbook. Check DMV site for exact details.

You are not understanding me.
It is going to take longer then Friday to get new plates for the 72.
I have plates left over from my Taurus and my brothers Avalanch, Explorer, Taurus, and Blazer to pick from.
Can I take a one of those sets, bring that with all the other stuff, and have the ability to use THOSE plates to put on the Camaro, and not wait to get a NEW set of plates.
Not QQ, no classic, no nothing. No inspection, any of that. What can they inspect? Cats? Its 1972, Pre-Nazi restrictions. Im not worried about inspection, I need to know if I can use old plates, renew them with DMV for the 72, and then be ready to ride by Sunday?
Added information, the Camaro is currently titled and was registerd in Wyoming where my grandfather had the car kept. I cannot use those plates for obvious reasons.

They have plates at any DMV office, what is the big deal? 45 minutes and you have plates in your hands.
Regular registration still requires inspection & associated sticker. Eewww, an ugly sticker.

Try Pypes. A lot of good comments at nastyz about them. And a lot of bad comments about the summit kits.

I went to Eatontown DMV and they failed my 1974 T/A and that was pre-cat.s also. They did the sniffer test and the guy laughed. He said with my cam I'd never pass! lol

I belive that in 73 starts cats? Eh, there were no cats in 72, and there wont be any cats that are going on it. Honk the horn, test the belts, check the lights, and Im out.
I orderd the Magnaflow exhaust, along with a new Lokar dipstick so that I can be ready for Sunday. Thank you gents.

Al, if you have a day off, i would definitely recommend going to trenton and getting qq plates for it. You can have it under normal insurance and have qq plates. One time registration fee and no inspection is definitely a good thing. I was in and out of there in less than a half hour once i found the building i had to go to. (its actually about a block away from the regular dmv in trenton)

I do not want QQ plates due to the restrictions on them. They cant inspect me for jack, there are no "standards" to compare against.

Al, if you get a regular registration and plates you will have to go through the same inspection as newer cars. I had to with my old 68 SS396 conv. Most likely you'll never pass the emission's test. Even if it is just the tailpipe at idle. If you decide to get the QQ plates you need a couple of pictures of the car(from the front and from the side) to take with you and a pencil tracing of the VIN. If you haven't titled it yet then you want to take a couple of checks with you since each window downtown is like a different office. It took me a couple of tries but I finally got the SS titled and registered. I would recommend doing it as soon as possible because if you're missing any documents or need anything notarized you'll need the extra time.
Oh, and yes, you can transfer plates if they are in your name and if they are for the same type of vehicle(car to car, or truck to truck)

Wait...why do I have to pass an emissions test for a car that has no emissions standards? I thought cars over a certain age did not get tested?

There are emission's standards going back to the late 60's cars. That's why they installed smog pumps on cars starting around 67. So if your engine isn't stock then you might have some problems passing the sniffer. Check with a local garage that does emission's testing and they might be able to "tune" the car to pass. If it doesn't need to go on the roller dyno you can probably tweak the timing and carb settings to pass.

They had standards Al, just much lower than current vehicles. I think, but could be wrong, that emission testing is 1968 and up vehicles.
Get QQ plates now just to get up and running, and look into the special collector car registration later. There was a whole discussion on it not too long ago, search. DMV has zero info on those on their site – in fact I just submitted a request to the DMV for written info on both types. I am not sure how fast you can get those plates.
I understand the QQ restrictions are ‘to and from event and to and from repair’, or something like that. You work at a car repair place – problem solved. Plus, just know a cruise or event you might be going to – print out the list off njcarshow.com. BTW, I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for unauthorized QQ usage.

You can use QQ plates for 3000 miles a year, to and from parades, club meets and gatherings but it shouldn't be used for normal drive to work usage. I find that most of my driving with the QQ plates is going to the gas station to try and keep the tank full! 7 mpg isn't getting me too far!
