Anyone ever install wall-wall carpeting?

My parents are away for the week and today some new furniture is getting delivered. Last night i got rid of the old couches and now you can see how bad the old carpeting is. its about 25 years old, and the color green. What were my parnets thinking back then.

Anyways we were talking before they left that soon we'd go for new carpeting, but i figure i could possibly do it this week and suprise them before they come back, but i never installed carpeting before, just ripped it out in a friends house. I am a pretty handy person so i think id get the hang of it pretty quickly once i figure otu how to. Also are there and good local places here in northern NJ to buy carpeting. I figured out that i need 410sq ft. Any advice/input would be appreciated. Oh, and if it turns out to seem to be too much work then i wont do it, but whatever.

My dad is in construction and ive laid down many feet of carpet. Well there is a very important tool you def need otherwise the carpet wil look like crap its called a carpet kicker and it has a pad on one end you can kick with your knee and a spikey thing on the other end that grabs the carpet. Once you have carpet cut to size, You lay down the tack strip wich is a wooden strip with little nails that stick up and hold the carpet down they go around the perimeter of the room. Start at one end get the carpet as close to the wall as you can get it, Hook it in the tack strip and you gotta use the carpet kicker to pulll the carpet reall tight to the other side of the room and push it down onto the tack stip basicly thats all there is to it. Carpeting isnt exacly easy if you never seen a professional do it before and usually ther ends up bein a lot of extra.
Carpet kickers can be found at either a good hardware stoor or Homedepot

You can only get carpet in 12' and 15' wide rolls. If your room is wider then that, then I would consider using a professional installer. It hard to make a seam look good. Some places do offer next day installations. One place is Empire carpet and I think Home depot offers it also on certain styles.

Im with noah, I had my room carpeted like 2 years ago, and we had a mom and pop store off of 22 do it, it was free instalation and a 10 buck tip, all we had to do was pick the carpet out and move like 2 things out of the room.. they did it the next day as well..

home depot rents carpet kickers for 15 bucks a day

I installed the carpet in my bedroom, wasn't too difficult.

I think you would be able to pull it off well as long as you could do it with one piece.

eh i'd need 2 peices for sure, anyways i'm too lazy, too much **** to move, lol. the room is oddly shaped 17x20 up to 17x28 and at one point down to 4x4. yea... so i decided not to do it...
