ok, since i know nothing about transmissions
If i buy a T5 transmission from an 87 T-bird turbo coupe, which has a different bellhousing cause its a 4cyl, would i be able to use the bellhousing from my current T5? i have no idea what hard parts are changeable on a transmission

I seem to remember that the T5 is mounted in a slight rotation in some cars, which has to do with the bellhousing. Sorry I've got no more info.

I somewhat recall something about the splines being different what is why GM didn't use the "world class T5" in the 350TPI motors and so they were all autos. I would look into that as well.
I think the turbo T's had the stronger T5 in them as well.

I did some Google work for ya, and found this site - http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2...p/index2.shtml
Basically, the trans you are looking at does not have the correct input shaft size, so you are also looking at clutch disc issues if you try to use the Turbo Coupe T5. Between buying a used tranny, then a clutch disc to fit, it's be cheaper to just hold out for a good used WC box.

Check out over at www.5speeds.com - they have a lot of pics of T5s, and some of the clues to tell apart a WC tranny. Good luck on the hunt!

I posted this on corral.net too, someone said one of the more common reasons that 5th gear fails is because of a little $2 snap ring. heres the quote:
Quote:
Most often, the reason 5th gear goes is when a $2 snap ring holding the 5th driven gear on breaks and causes the gear to slide back 2" until no contact is being made.

maybe ill have the trans shop drop out the trans and take a look.
