For a first car, anything with a v8 is gonna feel fast. Hell, the 2.8 automatic '85 Camaro I had as my first car felt pretty quick too.
Look around for a basic 305 in decent shape for a good price. Don't go nuts trying to find a 350 car...the L98 has too much power for a first time driver, IMO.

I have an 84 'bird for sale. Runs great decent shape. Would make a nice first car. Also if you click the Ebay link to see the pics and such you can add a BMR wonderbar to the list of suspension upgrades.http://www.njfboa.org/forums/showthread.php?t=21933
