ignition coil

since today was the first beautiful day we have had in a while, i decided to wash and wax my car... after the wash and wax, i popped the hood to make everything was in working shape. i reach over to one of the ignition coils and pull off a spark plug wire and when i pull it off a powdery brown substance falls out... my guess is rust or corrosion.... and the contacts of the ignition coil is redish brown. i know they are not supposed to be like that obviously... this would definitely damper my engine performance correct?
