trans problem

so i thought id go out take the t-tops off and waste some gas today, i drive around for about an hour messin with a few ricers and then my trans (4l60e) starts shiftin real hard and when in over drive it keeps shifting between 3th and 4th and wont stay in a gear. then its sits for about a half hour i go back out and its fine. i think it was just overheating. but does anyone have any other ideas??

My friends 94 Z28 was doing that.... would only happen after it got warmed up, he said screw it and just got it rebuilt at 128k miles. How many miles is on yours?

Overheating could cause it to start acting up - not sure if it will cause that specific issue though.

An add-on tranny cooler is never a bad idea....might want to get one and see if it helps, since it certainly won't hurt anything.

it has 111k on it and i have had a tranny cooler sitting in my gaurge for awhile i guess this is a reason to finally put it on.

also if i decided to rebuild it where can i find a good kit and what would be the best stall (it still a daily driver)

Go with a Trans-go shift kit when you do the rebuild - not sure what actual rebuild kit you'll want though.

As for stall speeds, that's gonna depend on current mods (and any that you are planning on doing soon), and how you use the car.

its stock just cai, header back exhaust and 160 stat. i just plan on doing gears, shift kit, and stall. its a daily driver and its gonna stay one just alittle faster then most is all i want. but i really dont want to do a full rebuild right now so if anyone might know what the problem is please let me know.

debris from clutches and if it has any bands is what causes the trans filter to loose its ability to free flow oil from pan to the valve body -- before you do anything i would buy 1/2 dozen qts of fluid and pull the pan change out the filter FIRST its a 25 buck thing -- if it still does act up after that than go for the rebuild -- only a hand full wont respond in a positive way after you do that -- overheated or not -- low oil pressure from a semi clogged filter can cause a trans to slipp = than not slip --- jz

At the very basic level:

What color/smell is the fluid? You can make a rough estimate on the trans's health based on its condition.

111K I'm betting its the 3rd OD clutches on there last legs.. Seems this is a weakness in the stock A4. Found that out the hard way today.

Just rebuild it and get it over with.

CPT does a "performance rebuild" for $800 providing none of your hard parts are destroyed and they seem to get rave reviews on Camaroz28.com
