RE: detailing hell/ experiment

A guy who works with me has a black f 150 thats real beat up (see pics below) he wanted it detailed so i asked if i could do an experiment i took it to the ford dealer and asked how much he'd give me for it on a trade (so i could take it back after the detail and get him to appraise it again as if he never saw it) long story short.... he offered 1100 more when it was detailed anyway heres some pics.. sorry for the quality my camera and the lighting isnt the best since i normally start them 5-6am obviously the first few are before and the last ones are after

and for those of you with a trained eye.... yes i did clean the running boards when i was done... they just werent done for the pics

very nice work. I'm assuming based on the trucks condition...it was never detailed before really. Makes it easy to really work down the paint to that kind of shine without too much fear of going through the clear. Btw, whats with the one chromeless wheel?

i used a orbital polisher it took me about 9 hours to do the whole truck inside and out.... im working on getting better with a rotary as we speak... when i get excellent with the rotary stuff like that will take me 3 hours or so i did however whip out the rotary on the hood tailgate and back part of the bed because i couldnt get everything out with the orbital.... i used menzerna/ poorboys polishes and nts 7 paint sealent which doesnt shine well at all but it lasts forever (6 months or so)

and yes it has been detailed before about 2 years ago they didnt show up in pics but there was rotary trails and holograms on both doors and the tailgate obviously the guy just compounded/glazed and called it a day so i had to be very careful with the clear

Orbitals can take a good deal of time depending on the severity of the paint condition. It can be improved with more aggressive product and pads but I always like to go easier with longer time than more aggressive that takes less time. Good call on whipping out the rotary. With the orbital (porter cable), I usually go over about 1 inch/sec with a mild abrasive swirl cutter and it works pretty well. Looks great once again!

i tried the most agressive set up you can get with the orbital and they still werent coming (yellow pad with menzerna power gloss compound) i didnt have any choice i would have preffered not to use the rotary till i perfect my skills (im anal as hell about everything being as perfect as can be)
