Took the bird over to get inspected and get the collector car sticker. Everything went pretty smooth but the bitch at the dmv wasn't too concerned with my very simple request to scrape all the crap off the windshield from the old sticker. She got the sticker off but left the lovely glue residue on the windshield while sticking the new one on. No big deal but bothers me.

Went even better after I pulled up and was waiting. A brand new c6 z06 rolls up and my jaw just kinda dropped. Ive seen them before in person but was just like yea oh crap. Talked with the guy for a few minutes and wasnt able to score a ride lol. He said he had a 98 cartek 427 vette at home...

Lastly, the guy at the dmv took us inside to show us pics of a guy totalling his c5 z06 right in the parking lot because he failed due to a photocopied insurance card. Hit one of those steel/cement poles and trashed the whole thing. Pretty nasty looking at the pics.

oh and I ran into a new m3 on the 287 and proceeded to show him my taillights. I was even nice and gave him the hit.

What is the collector car sticker? Is it like the QQ plate?

You have to do the collector car when you renew your registration. I've been told they will not do it unless it's an initial or renewal.

collector sticker is just registration and inspection. you keep regular plates. you have to have collector/pleasure vehicle insurance to get it. cant be a daily driver. youre limited to i think 3000 miles per year. you get an upsidedown triangle sticker, and dont get any kind of inspection - emissions, tires, tint, apparently nothing. they check your odometer, make you drive around the block to see if it works/accurate, and thats it.

Yup I got my two Camaros collector regisration last month. It was pretty easy but according to the guy you dont get an automatic renewal form in the mail for collector registration. You have to go to the DMV to get a renewal form every two years. You also have to pay for the regular registration on top of the collector car voucher.

Damn, I think my QQ plate reg is due soon and I did not get anything in the mail yet. So they won't send me anything?

I dont know about QQ (historic) plates but thats what the guy who inspected my car at the DMV said that collector car registration does not come in the mail automatically when its time to renew.

You don't need to have special collector car registration, you just need to have a second car registered and insured that you can drive.

Jared - the website doesn't say anything about an age limit for collector car registration, but you may be thinking about most collectors insurance companies, as most of them require that the driver be at least 25.

when I went to renew my registration, I paid the extra 25 bucks to get the collector car voucher. The voucher is taken to the dmv during inspection and they gave me the triangle sticker. My insurance does not say collector insurance but if it was checked thoroughly, its listed as a pleasure vehicle. As for the age limit, I'm 23 and had no problem doing any of this.

As far as the m3 race, jumped onto 287 from exit 5 (bumpy as hell) and some lady in a camry was on my ass. Since I slowed down for the bumps, she was on my ass even more so once it smoothed out I hit it up to 90 or so and then coasted back to 5 over. A red m3 was in the far left lane and sped up to catch up to me. He was a vert with his top up (mine was down as usual) and downshifted and kept lunging his car to show me he wanted to play. We were doing maybe 65-70 and I smiled and waved him on. He looked forward and hit the gas. Immediately I jumped on it (quick blip and downshift to 3rd) and stopped his 1 car lead and came up hard on him. I slammed 4th gear right as my rear bumper was at his nose and proceeded to throw maybe 3-4 cars on him before letting off before I even needed to shift to 5th. This was all NA of course.

I slowed and he came back up and just gave me a thumbs up and a smile. He went off doing maybe 10 over the limit while my exit 9 was coming up. Good run but damn it was hot that day.

blackbird what insurance company you have and how do you get pleasure insurance, how much cheaper then regular is it and what are the restrictions,.. i just got regular and i want to do this to my camaro so i can make it faster and not have to worry bout all the other state mandatorys

can i go and do this with regular insurance and still get collector car?

wish a motorcycle was considered a second car considering its actualy my daily driver and the car just sits there 99% of the time

Every 3 months? They told me that the collector car inspection sticker was good for two years. The next time I have to go inspect it they said I have to get a renewal form for the collector car voucher.

Vehicles exempt from inspection

Certain vehicles are exempt from inspections, but they do vary, so be sure to check what is required for yours.

The following vehicles are exempt from diesel emission inspection requirements:
Contractor equipment in transit
Farm vehicles
Vehicles operated by a county, municipality, fire district, or duly incorporated non-profit organization and used for first aid, emergency, ambulance, rescue or fire-fighting purposes

Historic vehicles
General inspections are not required for historic or collector vehicles. To be classified as a "historic vehicle" it must be:

Used only for exhibition purposes or manufactured before 1945

Collector vehicles
To be classified as a "collector vehicle" you need to apply when you register and make sure that the vehicle:
Is not registered as a "historic vehicle" or a "street rod"
Is not driven more than 3,000 miles per year (proof available at odometer reading)
Is insured as a limited use "collector vehicle"
To qualify for an exemption:
Visit an MVC Agency to purchase a voucher for a special decal to mark the vehicle exempt from safety and emission inspection; fee is $25 for an initial voucher and $10 to renew
Take the collector vehicle to a State Inspection Station where the inspector will verify the odometer reading
Call MVC at (609) 292-6500 or toll-free in New Jersey at (888) 486-3339 for an application and submit completed application to:

Collector Vehicle
P.O. Box 016
Trenton, NJ 08666-0016

Back in April I changed ownership on my Firehawk (the car was originally in my dad's name for insurance purposes) and I had collector's registration on it. The sticker on my car is still good till October 2007. But since the car was now going to be in my name, I had to get a new registration and re-apply for the collector's as well. However, I still didn't need to get a new inspection sticker, because under state law now, as long as the sticker on the car is not expired, inspection is still good even if the car changes owners.

So when I was at the MVC, they first gave me a new registration card that's good thru April 2008, because regular registration has to be renewed once a year. Then they gave me a collector's voucher that was good thru only July 2007. That surprised me because I've had the collector's reg for almost two years already, and when I got it inspected the first time the station kept my the voucher. So naturally, I figured the voucher would be good till October when it was up for inspection, and then I would just get a new voucher every two years before the next inspection.

I told this to the person at the MVC, but they said you're always supposed to have a voucher, and it needs to be renewed every three months.

I know, it's stupid and confusing, and I'm still not 100% sure about it. But apparently, I'm the only who's been told this.

my SS will be going collector tomorrow, so ill find out all the details. But theres no way in hell I can have the registration renewed every 3 months, considering i wont even be back till Dec. but im my case i believe that wouldnt even matter, i was reading something about active duty military and indefinate extension of inspections, registrations and licenses, until off active duty.

The way I understand it, the voucher is your collector's registration card and is independent of your regular registration. Any clarification would be appreciated.

From my experience (and I have been doing this ever since I got sticker #0000014) leads me to believe that the MVC really doesn't know WTF they are doing with collector's reg most of the time.

Last fall I just got a voucher, went to inspection, did a lap around the block, got the sticker, and drove off. As long as the car has its sticker and registration current I was told "no worries".

John, that's not to say that what you were told is completly bogus. But I haven't seen that before in my dealings.

I got the voucher and when I got my car inspected they took the voucher. The guy told me that the collector sticker was good for two years. He said when the the two years are up you need to get another voucher. The guy you had gave you bad info. You do not need to have a voucher every 3 months. All the voucher does is show them at inspection that you paid the fee to get the collector vehicle inspection.

yea you apply for a renew of collector car registration when the sticker is up in 2 yrs. When I went to the dmv, they took my voucher and I got the sticker. There is no need for the voucher after you got the sticker.

I have state farm insurance and I pay about 150/month for my insurance with healthy figures for liability and collision. I'ma also 23 and no accidents. My insurance just went down to a tad over 200 for both my cars combined so not bad in my book.

I think maybe he meant that the voucher was good for 3 months, after which it expires and you need a new one to go to inspection.
