HPtuners...

I'm on a quest to ring max MPGs outa my Sexalier, and I've noticed that HPtuners supports my car. I would think that some tuning would help a lot, as the car has the typical GM "run rich" format. Only prolly is, I'm less than even a noob to doing my own tuning, and I don't know about shelling out the bux for HP + a laptop to do the work. I know Bill [foff] doesn't do outside tuning anymore, so is there anybody else out there doing it? I'd rather pay someone else for their expertise vs shelling out big bux for something I may use to f' up the car...

check out www.HPTuners.com before you decide to pay almost as much to let someone else do a minimal improvement tune on your car.
the software is layed out in a very easy to follow format and there are a ton of "help" files that explain pretty much anything that you coudl possibly need to know. they also have a very good forum and tune dump on their web site for any other questions you may need to ask.
you have been around cars for a long time and have a strong grasp of how an engine works. jsut insert typing for turning the dizzy or changing jets and you have the idea. it is the same old principles, you jsut don't have to get your hands dirty to take advantage anymore.

Yeah, im not sure if you'll find many tuners willing to tune your cavalier right now and at that they probably would know about as much about tuning them as you

Also remember Bob, if you do purchase hptuners & use it to tune your cavalier you could always then sell it with enough credits to license 3 other vehicles...meaning you could get a large chunk of that money back if you decided that being able to scan nearly any GM vehicle, scan many late model Ford vehicles and tune several other vehicles isn't worth the $ in the long run...most see the value & keep it around for a while

See, Bill, I'm an idiot and the whole concept scares me. But it also
intrigues me. Bottom line, is that $499 buck jammy all I need? And what about a lap top...what do I look for, and can a cheap one suffice? Not sure if I want to drop a g note on stuff that I wouldn't know what the hell to do with...

really, it is all common sense stuff. if the number comes up lean, add fuel, if there is no knock detected, add some timing. everything is logged and 'splained in a very very easy to follow format.
the only way to mess things up on a stock or mild vehicle would be to do things that are obviously stupid, like adding 40degrees of timing or cutting the fuel in half. both of you guys have enough common sense to handle it, trust me.

Hey bob.

If you decide to give it a try, I have an old laptop you could buy for $100. Just let me know the minimum requrements. I can't seem to get on their website to check.

It's a few years old, but it still can handle most modern programs.

PM if you're interested.

Wonder if there is any way to trick the computer instead of having to go thru the cost of the PC/Software. Did you check if JET makes a module for the car? Maybe a powerprogrammer could be used and cost less?

Might also look around the web for a cavalier site? When I have the old Z24 I found lots of good stuff from a 3.4 V6 board.
