Looking to get one for an '02 Malibu.

Does anyone have a brand they can recommend? Any problems I should know about? Any shops near Raritan NJ that do a good job?

I heard viper is really good, there are two more good ones i just cant think of them right now. I was looking into the Viper 5900 but its a little expensive and i need the money for the iroc.

I have an audivox one installed in my blazer and it works fine, you can set the module to keep th etruck running for 5min 10min or 15min, just dont forget to only click th ekey onto the ON position and not the START position, I have two more in a bag (its nice having a family member working for a GM dealership) both are missing fobs, both work, I have the phone number of the installer he gets $100 on teh side to hook it up, he has extra fobs, if you want one PM me

Key? You have to leave your key in the ignition for the remote starters to work?

I think he means when you get in, it's habit to turn the key to start it. Gotta remember not to do that. I used to do it by accident all the time when I used my auto starter. The batteries are dead in the fob so I need to replace it so I can use it again. Just haven't gotten around to it.

I can't imagine a sound thats worse then trying to start a started car ....

The only remote starter I delt with was a Bulldog (i think thats what it was) years ago. Put it in my friends car, worked fine for a bit till it screwed up and wouldn't disengage the starter. Had to pull the battery cables quick fast and in a hurry.

I put one of those JC Whitney remote starters in an old 4Runner. It worked great, never had a problem unless the keys were in my pocket while I was on the ground working on it! If you rolled onto the button, it would start the truck up while I was under it! You just need to remember to leave your front defrost setting and the fan on for those cold mornings. A lot of them can integrate into the existing door locks and hatch release as well.

While we're on the subject, I heard that you can't use one with a manual transmission. Any truth to this or are there units designed to work with a stick?

You can install them on any vehicle. You might kill yourself if you put it on a manual trans vehicle and accidentally trigger the starter while it's in gear if you're working on the vehicle. It's not recommended, but you could do it if you wanted to.

I've seen them now that have "triggers" built into them, so that when you start the car it will also automatically turn on the rear defroster or your heated mirrors/seats.
