credit scam?
So I had just applied for a credit card (first premier bank) and when I applied it said nothing about annual fees, program fees, and all that BS. I just got the card and now I'm being charged 179 bucks?! For what I haven't used it yet. Someone's gonna hear it tomorrow when I call. Anyone else get F'ed over or had a similar situation?

those are "secured" cards . Your credit limit is probably 250 bucks and the 179 is their way of insuring they wont too big of a hit. you should have read the paper work

Yup that's first premier for you. I have since dropped them like a bad habit. I was due for one of those annual fees from them last year, I had no charges on the card so the day I got the fee I cancelled the card and they took back their fees. I really did hate them.
If you have bad or so-so credit try Juniper, they have low interest rates, some-what high limits and no anuual fees.

Call up the bank, ask them what are these fees, and have them highlight them for you in the docs YOU have.
Or even better, call up, pretend like you would like to open up a credit card, and ask if they have zero fees or charges to own it. If they say no fees/charges, ask for the name of the person you are speaking too, and then go down there to talk to the branch manager, and have him or her highlight the part about the fees and ask why you were lied too over the phone, if that is the case.

yes secured card. they charge the 179 as insurance. once i paid that.(i didnt charge anything until i paid the card off. and used the card a little like 30 a month. and paid in full each bill. 6 months later i had a 4000 limit. its worth it if you have bad credit. or cant get accepted elsewhere.

I get like 4 of these in the mail every week. The paper work explains how much they will rape you in charges. Ya gotta read this stuff or they will take advantage of you. Try Capital One or Household Bank. They don't hit you with processing fees and monthly maintanance fees..ETC,ETC. Gotta read the paper work or they will screw you to the wall!

Household was taken over by HSBC...I had a Household card, but they sent me an HSBC card after the merger/buyout.

i just got the same card like two days ago lol. A friend of mine has it and it actually helped his credit a lot. it went from a 510 to over 630 in a year.he also started with the same limit as us. 250 limit with that rediculous 179 initial charge. he did say that they didnt give him any more problem afterwards though. as long as the payments are done on time, especially if its done by a bank card, they dont have a reason to bust your balls. He was on time with all his payments as well as his other credit obligations. settled two accounts. that credit card was the only credit card he could get and like i said it helped. While i dont expect this to be the only thing to help my creidt, itll definatly be a great tool. hopefully it will be for you too

i did one of those cards, as well, and it helped me get back on track. now i have 5 visa/mc cards, lowes, home depot, sears and jc penney. my credit report shows my only credit as revolving (CC), but i do show the history of the mortgage, etc., because once i became disabled EVERYTHING went into the wife's name. except my baby, which no one better even breath on.
back to credit, have you guys heard of lifelock? http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news0.../lifelock.html
i am going to reserve judgment on them. i can't quite figure out if they are a concierge service (doing something for you that you can do yourself) or if they actually do something that you can't do, or that would be cost-prohibitive to do yourself...
btw, down at the bottom of the page there is a link to get to the 3 credit reporting agencies so you can check your credit report (free, one a year) if you haven't already done it. kind of interesting to look over my shoulder at the obligations life throws at you.

It's on your paperwork, read it again. I had one back in the day and it's legal/legit.

Ahhh well yes you got a secured credit card. I am seeing more and more of these now with the big credit crunch. You didnt get nailed with credit fees or finance charges, you just got duped into a different credit card then you thought you were getting. I dont know what your contract is with them, but I would belive to cancel it, toss it, and get a traditonal card.
