Ever store a car?
So ive been thinking about moving out of my rents place ever since i graduated and been thinking about it alot now that I know my job is somewhat secure. If i were to move out i would have to get my firebird out of the garage. just curious if anyone does or has had to keep a car at some sort of storage rental unit place.

ya every winter we store the trans am at a regualr storage place, the car fits fine in their unit. never had any problems

nice, thanks for the reply. if u dont mind me asking whats a ballpark monthly fee to store it. what size unit do u rent? just big enough to fit? the car is never gona be done but i plan to have the major problems fixed by the end of the summer. But id like to have little more room to move around inside if i have to.

Some storage places will not allow you to store a car with any fluids - even oils, for some reason unbeknownst to me. Verify before you sign anywhere.

If gear oil or trans fluid ignites you have other issues - like the facility is already on fire. Leaking is more likely I suppose.

I'd be willing to bet that leakage is the main reason. Once you drip stuff then it's an environmental issue for them.

I agree, I never thought of that. I was too busy tryng to figure out how hot the storage facitly was that oil would lite up.

If I remember my science correctly, and I may not, it's about flash point. For you to light up trans fluid or motor oil it's got to be pretty damn hot. I'd bet well over 400*F. Which was my point. The place is already on fire. Run!

do they have any more units left? i wouldnt mind driving a bit to save 50 percent on the monthly costs to put the t/a away in the winter

hahaha no i agree. but say you had a slight trans leak and it was dripping on your exhaust. start the car up several months later, give it a moment, and now you, the storage owner, are paying for everyone's stuff. fun!

True. But my point was that an oil puddle can be a big problem for them from an EPA standpoint. Seems trivial but it isn't.

This is quite true, most people dont think it is a big deal but those places dont want to be fined by the EPA, would probably put them out of business
Another thing that may be a consideration is that the steel in a gas tank can rot and they dont know how long a vehicle may be in there without any attention. Gas tanks stored over time can accumulate moisture and an old car could already have thining points, add time and you can have a potential hazard...

I'm swayed on the leaking argument. And gasoline was never part of my thought process. I really meant engine oil, gear oil, etc.
