Health Insurance options for the unemployed

Just got word that the company my father-in-law was working for closed it doors today with zero notice. He worked there for 37 years and was the plant supervisor making great money. The company has slowly gone down hill over the past 5 years but he didn't expect a sudden closing like what happened this morning. No severance is being paid and no continuation of benefits so he is really SOL.

I'm trying to help him with finding another job but in the meantime, they need health coverage. Cobra will not work since apparently the company must still be paying into a health benefits carrier to collect. My mother in-law works part time and will attempt to become full time to get benefits but it doesn't look pretty. What are the options available to those unemployed under 55 and with no ability to take advantage of Cobra?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check into the Middlesex County Board of Social Services. They are located at 181 How Lane, New Brunswick 08903-Phone #732-745-3500. They may be able to help out with Food Stamps, Insurance and more. From what I hear, the place is mobbed so get there WAYYYY before they open. Hope it helps.

They are located in S. Jersey (Cherry Hill/Deptford) area but I assume there would be a comparable place down their way. Thanks.

Anyone else?

HEALTH

Hey I saw your posting I am actually a health broker in the state of nj mostly doing health plans for small buisness in the area however I have knowledge of the individual plans as well. The best bet would be for them to pick up an individual plan for the time being. The most important thing is that they do not have a lapse in coverage for any longer then 3 months. If that happens they can have pre exsisting conditions on any new plans and that is not something you want to deal with. As of right now for individual health in NJ there are 3 comapnies Aetna, Horizon and Healthnet. With Horizon being the most competative in most cases. If you need any further assistance or help with getting a plan in place let me know. You can call me at 908 698 2071 leave me a message if I dont pickup.
