HELP BlackTopKing - Re Ferb, TA

Ok, so here we go….I have come to the point where the little issues have grown and the little thing ( stuff that just bothers me) have also become too much.

Action must be taken, lol.
Seriously though. Its time for me to get dirty again and finish what I started. Its also time to ask for

HELP….

I know a lot and have done a lot myself but at this time some things I just don’t know. I love this site and enjoy many of the people here.

But my fav part is that I LEARN. a lot here and I figure I become the student, the young grasshopper.

So first off - the little things.
The engine bay…Ewwww I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. Now in my defense (so that you guys donet eat me alive) when the motor was pulled and broke down- rebuilt to the 383. I was renting a garage and had some help (rented with others). At first it started great and a lot of nice work was done, but when the guy we rented from was sued and lost the place-no one told us…We had cops come on a Friday morning and we were told we had to go….Out by Monday. Now there was more then just my car and tools so we had to boogie…. Long story short- My motor went in the car in like 4hours and time for wiring and organization wasn’t applied - This is why its more of a mess then it should be, since I have avoided to really try to clean it up- specially since I have been driving it-

I want to change that Starting This Month and want done by April 30th. So besides the hood - already have paint but am waiting to do that .

Like a set of dirty underwear at the hospital- I am in sham to show, but this is the current situation…..

“Picture”

Nasty

1st loom got to go. And wires need to find new homes. I am going to ask help from the gurus with this cause- the car was TPI then Carb then TPI again- Harness has crap hooked up that aint needed and stuff that aint hooked. So I will start with the non hook ups- maybe you guys can inform me on what I am looking at and dealing with.
Have some connections that need to be done better and plugs to be replaced as well, advice with that would be great.

Edit: The hoses...God I want them off the top of my motor

List to get tomorrow:
New Plugs (NGK or ACDelco)
New Wires (Accel maybe)

So to start with todays lesson…
NO FANS- and GOT SUPER SUPER WAY HOT. Pulled over cooled down went to leave and car don’t start- no click no nothing…. Tried to jump and still nothing…after about 40mins finally a click and a start. Now I have had issues with the VATT and Viper fighting on who wanted to shut me down before, by bypassed the VATT. I do have to turn key ON wait for pump and then START, but today I got a couple gargle sound (kind of electric instead)
I pulled the top Fuse (Silver) and Wiped clean, then it started….Could that of been issue????I don’t think so.

“Picture”

So now I am wondering why the FANs don’t work- they are coming on around 220+ with AC on- nothing when not on…But tested FANs and they work….Could be Relay? This is the pic of the location described but mine are up front by head lights

“Picture”

What am I missing, are they just in a different place?

“Picture”

Two Blk to ground
Two Blk with Red (or pinkish) to each the far left ( A) has Orange wire out into harness of who no knows what… There are other wires as well Tan and I think green, but can anyone name the Relays?

And thoughts on that issue be great I intend to deal with that Sunday. Questions ?Ask more pictures? Ask

This little Guy says P.E.G fuse up by the battery- what is this thing….

Next question,

Block offs. I had them open -except the screw…for about 9months - no real issues (code 13).
Then they were pluged off- no real issues…should they or should they not be? Pro Cons? If they should I am get black ones if not then I am going to un plug them…

Ps…what the **** is the screw for anyway…its one of those things- it was done for a reason when I drop car off at my mad uncles house when he had helped with car once ( not again…) but I don’t know why he did it or what for….
I want that out TOO.

I know guys Its bad….dirty underwear and the screw well that is like the pimple on your butt….not cool, when there is a pic online of it…

Lastly for today atleast….

Exhaust, LORD KNOWS I WANT A NEW ONE…

But untill then, headers I love and have had them for seven years- only repainted them when the motor was put in, they need to come out and power coated or something…but why is the Pass side rear two bolts getting loose, only when I get into the car- I can and will hear the pop pop sound of the exhaust…new one is the Down pipe wont stay bolted up…keeps loosing and falling, hate the sound.

I was thinking cause no flex pipe and the whole exhaust is welded- so when I get into it the motor twist but not exhaust, something got to give, RIGHT?

Also
Since you are seeing that nastiness, look at the leak…WTF, it only happens after oil changes for about a week then gone, thing is it looks so much worst then it is, maybe 2 quarters worth, I thought it was the rear pass valve cover because I had to replace that and maybe the sealant wasn’t good. Either that or the intake manifold (rear) is the issue, that was installed the day the motor was put in and for a while I threw funny codes, one day check it and bolts were loose- I simply tighten them down and left it on the TO DO LIST….2 years now.
Could the new oil or over filling do that? Just odd cause not a lot not all time and I am never low…just thought some one might recognize the area were it hits…

Does the exhaust gaskets tell you anything when they change color?

And Sigh****

I think that is enough for now.

Thanks to anyone who replies…

Extra credit if you know what these are…

#1 you will run into some problems with the spark plug wires cable tied together. Get something to keep them separate.
With the blockoff on the valve cover, is there any kind of pcv ventilation? If not you'll contaminate your oil and not have proper ring sealing.

Yeah, I was thinking exactly the same thing. Out of all of the issues the PCV jumped out at me.

Is there a PCV/breather setup in the valve covers?

You should have a hose running from the port that's blocked off on the throttlebody to the hose connector that's plugged in your passenger side valve cover. That'll let the PCV system operate correctly - it looks like you have a hose connected from the driver side valve cover to the intake, which is correct.

Ok, Thanks.

So you are saying that the Pass Valve cover PVC should be conected to the Top of the TB...I have a Breather on the Driver Side but didnt know about the system needing it like that.
would it be better to conect or put breather?

Also I agree with the spark plug wires, and I should get something I did tie them together some time ago becasue the on hit the header and arced threw the wire itself. but I will get something to brace them tonight.

What about the Screw? Needed?

edit: quick note pass side valve cover does not have breather?

the little plug by the battery with the 2 wires to it is the fuse for the ECU

the engine bay actually doesnt look that bad... find urself some unpainted black wire loom, replace the red hoses with black ones and maybe ditch that cruise control

You can make some big changes with a little preplanning, effort and dollars.

Some of things I've done:

A) Hide what you can

B) Blend what you can't

C) It's gotta be shiney = polished or painted.

Some rattle can paint, wire, soidering gun, zip ties and new wire and hoses covers will do magic!

First thing I notice is all the different colors. Yellow plug wires, red, blue, silver/chrome wire covers, red and black heater hoses. Change that all to no more then 2 colors.

Remove as much as you can, Overflow and washer tank ect. Get some auto primer, paint and clear coat in rattle cans. Mask off what you don't want painted, then sand and paint. New wiper tank should be fairly cheap, I think Yearone and such sell them. Maybe an after market rad overflow to change things up?

I'd start by looking at how you can reroute wires to clean up the top of the engine and fender wells. Alloot of times the factory wires are long enough for you to easily relocate things out of view. Others you will need to add length. (When I had my 3rd gen I moved all the relays from the engine bay to under the dash.) What I couldn't relocate I routed the wires down along the frame.

Then attach the wires and hoses, I'd suggestied black for anything not near the engine, then maybe a color that will stand out near the intake/vavle covers. The colored wire covers all over the engine tend to make it look too busy in my opinion. For the heater hoses, mayne some 45 drgree elbows to reloute them or braided covers?

For the plug wires: Either use wire stands/OVC looms or get cut to fit and route then down and up to the plugs.

Vacuum lines as well, reroute then, or at least make then look straight. if you want to get real involves, replace then with polished aluminum tubing and such. I drilled holes in the back of the fender/wheelwells and routed the hood release cable, wiper hose and such all out of eye site. again, pre-planning so you drill the holes and determine where you are going to relocate stuff before you start putting down the paint.

I went a bit more extrem, After relocating stuff I filled on the out mounting holes, made plates to cover other areas etc before putting down the paint. I basically did some smoothing before painting. I'll post some pics of my 93's engine compartment ASAP.

Thanks guys

1st thing 1st...

ECU Fuse?....no way? wow if so that went way over my head- i been looking at think for a while, like why are you here and do i need you...great i asked before i did anything to it...lmao

bonus points awarded

Alot of good suggestions and I agree deffently have to think about what is going where and how before i start moving things around, The multi color rainbow crap got to go and fast- I also agree about the heater hose- for get why it is red, Think it was all i could find. I swar some is my fault just not all- kind just reacted and got it together with the intention to correct- and since, well have not- and i just keep the hood closed...Lol

but not this summer,

may not be bling but a nice organizd clean set up be good. I saw the thread with the engine bays and i was like wow... i would have to delete 60% of mine to get that look- maybe i will later on but i rather start actually doing and finishing all the little projects...

as said in the above post

litttle thought time and money

would help.

with the heater houses, do you route around the ac towards the front?
And the vaccum hoses- change to hard lines? where would you get that?

Thanks guys

last question- Red or Yellow
I would like the color theme the car and I thought black and gold would look cool if done well. Kind of trick though- if not right could look bad- plus the motor block is orange already 'stroker'. if i could go back and re do that -I would of done different color.

so then i thought red would look good- with rest of car (black gold and red is nice combo) but could do yellow too...
any thoughts...

i am getting paint and loom this weekend.

Whatever you do, get rid of all those colors! Yellow, red, blue, pink, arghhh1!

Looms and hoses should be black. All else looks like crap. I hate yellow plug wires. Plug wires are not the center piece under the hood. They don't need attention. My advice is pick a theme and stick to it.

Is there a vacuum line routing diagram under the hood? There is supposed to be one. Including where the PCV valve and breather should be.

Find your wiring diagrams and start tracing: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19

YOu can also find diagrams in service manuals and the autozone website and alldata

BTW, photobucket has a nice thumbnail option. Just saying.

Looks like its just being used as a plug for that vacumm line. It will not adjust anything if thats what your asking its just being used as a plug
