New GM Crate Engines

In the back of the past 2 Hot Rod mags, they have shown 2 new engines part of GM's crate engine catalog.

#1 is the RWD Northstar making 320hp. I think it comes with everything but the serp set up.
#2 is GM's new supercharged ecotec 2.0 all forged 4cyl motor making "205hp"

Im sure the LS2 will be up next 8)

GM just put out ALOT of new products for their crate motors. I think even the 6.0 is available, and I hear swaps directly into an LS1 F-body.

the 6.0 and LS2 are both "direct" swaps into an ls1 powered vehicle. you will need to upgrade teh fuel pump and do some tunign for wither one.

later

#1 is kind of cool if it displaced at least another liter. To me it's nothing more than a GM version of the Ford 4.6L 32v cobra 4.6L only with 15 more hp. I will have to say I'm proud of GM for making 15 more hp than Ford. That's pretty cool, I just wish they offered parts for it like Ford does for their mustangs.

#2 is a 4 cylinder. WTF are you doing looking at half a v8, j/k but in a way I'm not. 205hp on a supercharged 2.0L engine... even with a pulley you won't gain as much as say a pulley on a 5.4L engine (cough lightning cough). There are too many n/a inline 4's making over 205hp, that's weak. I'd expect no less than 220hp as a START. Just look at the Evo's and get back to me (yea turbo). Then again these are just there "GM crate engines", not the performance crate motors.... or is it. I wouldn't pay for a blown inline 4. Anybody's dog could create a turbo kit for less and make more power. I'm actually suprised GM didn't go with a turbo for that ecotec. That would have been a much smarter move if they wanted the thing to sell.

the ecotec will be getting turbocharged for the Pontiac Solstice/Saturn Curve.

You must have missed the quotes around the 205...

Sport Compact Mag got 200hp at the wheels from the Ion RL. Figure thats 240hp at the crank.
On top of that, GM has not yet really max'ed out this engine. Its redline is low, and has limited its boost to only a few pounds.
This engine is from Europe, and is all forged. Its designed for boost, but GM NA has yet to really test its performance applications.

Cool, then it isn't so useless . I have kept tabs on the ecotec motor to see how it does against the competition. They're getting some serious horsepower out of the stock black and crank! Rods are always an issue and the stock pistons aren't designed for tons of bmep. Replacing those 2 things alone and doing a good head porting job should be relatively inexpensive for a domestic inline 4 to support 500+hp.
The turbo is a no brainer but they should at least aftercool the blower setup. Then the smaller pulley won't be overdriving the blower and pushing 12psi with air temps of 240+ .
I'd like to see some northstar engines making 500hp n/a. If that could be done with just cams, port/polish, and an intake then I'd be seriously considering it. Nothing compares to having 4 valves per cylinder, not even a turbo. Completely stock Lt1 with arao engineering heads and headers made 475hp at redline. That redline was the bottom end, the horsepower was still increasing.
