The Lincoln is dead......

As I was driving home from school tonite, my car suddenly took a turn for the worse. The instrument panel dimmed, my battery light came on, the power steering system failed, and the car began to make a horrible tapping noise. I continued on my merry way, hoping that I could reach home before the car quit on me. That didn't happen. The car got progessively worse, with the temperature gauge climbing rapidly. When i got to this one hill on Rt. 287, the car went into it's death throes. The tapping became very loud, and when i stepped on the gas, i got no response. I coasted over to the side of the road, and parked it. Now it made a different sound.....hard to describe. Almost sort of a wailing noise. Smoke began to pour from the engine bay. Not wanting to stick around and see if the car caught on fire, i got out and walked a safe distance away. Luckily, a state trooper was about a minute behind me when i pulled over, and he showed up right after i left the car. A tow truck was called, and I had that godforsaken POS towed to my mechanic. It will be junked, as it's not worth repairing. I'm pretty sure a radiator hose was busted, leaking coolant all over the place. that would explain the rise in temperature while driving, as well as the smoke. why it would cause the electrical system to weaken, and the power steering to quit working, is beyond me.

my search for a new car begins. Budget is $3000. the new car cannot be a Camaro or Firebird, v6 or v8. it must be either a 4-cyl japanese car, or a decent 6-cyl i can sneak under my parent's radar.

What about like a 78-86 Buick Regal. I always liked thoes. Some came with V6. Others came with a small V8. And the lucky guys got the Turbo V6 (TType/GN)

Sounds like you threw the serpentine belt (no power steering, no charging, no cooling cause it's all on the same pulley system). The squealing noise you heard was probably the belt getting wrapped up in one of the pulleys.

Fear not, you'll be drivin' the Linc again tomorrow.

i won't be driving it anymore. i thought the belt was the cause too....because it overheated, the radiator is probably busted (that was probably the source of the "wailing" sound). Besides, the car isn't worth fixing. It belongs in a junkyard.
