Yeah that's definitely not in the rat rod category. A true rat rod is American based, usually chopped and/or channeled, flat paint, patina, and has a number of creative parts such as kegs for fuel tanks, tin can air cleaners, etc.

I'm starting to put together a plan myself to try and get my hands on a truck to rat rod...time to start knocking on some sponsorship doors.

Also get ready for some rebodied cars at BJ. One collector is selling a rebodied 69 Camaro ZL1, a rebodied 1970 Yenko Deuce Nova and a rebodied 69 Yenko Camaro. Of course the BJ descriptions don't reflect the cars are full rebodied cars. I'm still not sure how that is even legal since the VIN plate was transferred to another car, that is illegal in every state. BJ has been going downhill quickly ever since they changed to no reserve cars. Nobody with a real car with real paperwork is going to risk running it through with no reserve so they are loaded up with junk that has a nice shine to it.

It's probably a technicality because the frame is still original? Although if it's a unibody that's probably not true either. There's going to be some interesting laws and so forth coming up about this issue. They went through the same thing with bikes after the whole chopper craze. It's very difficult now to get a kit bike titled, even if it comes with an MSO.

"Ship of Theseus" frauds are a growing concern in resto and mod work.

Backstory: Basically what the Ship of Theseus was was a ship that had all of its planks replaced one by one, so the paradox was if the ship was completely rebuilt is it even the same ship as the original.

How it applies to us: Kind of as it implies- at what point is a car not the original car anymore? Is the definition of the car the body or the VIN tag? If I were to rebody my car with everything except for the cowl, is it the old car with replacement parts or a new car with an asterisk attached?

There are several hidden VINs stamped into the body and on full frame cars the frame as well. If you transfer the VIN tag to another body or frame, then it's illegal. If you cut the hidden stamped vin sections and weld them into another body, then you're in even bigger trouble. I'm not sure how a rebodied car is allowed to keep it's VIN, it should be given a state issued VIN after all the legal stuff is ironed out. Restamped motors and misrepresented cars are a whole nother issue.
