Anyone have some old PC RAM laying around?

I need some memory for my old ass computer from college. My parents are using it now and a buddy installed XP on it but it's running waaaaaay slow. The computer only has a 450mHz processor with a P1 or PII chip in it. I went to Best Buy to get some but they wanted a fortune for it because nobody makes it for machines that old anymore. If you have some you can part with for free or really cheap please let me know. Thanks!

I don't know if it matters but what brand computer and what memory chips do you need? I might have an old Dell P166 that has some ram in it but I think the Dell ram is proprietary.

 Nope, it's generic stuff.

Any idea what type of RAM you need? I'm gonna assume it's prolly PC-66 or PC-100 SDRAM.

Ha....I have no idea. The computer was made in like 99....it's a custom machine from some local shop. My buddy had it open last week I'll ask him what type of memory it needs.

Ha, you wanna be taken back in time, when I started at my company you were lucky if you had dual 5-1/4" floppy drives and 480K of ram! Being a programmer, I had one of the few 10 meg hard drives in the company! You should try writing programs to run on a PC with just a floppy and less than 640K of ram. I remember trying to add some more memory to my old Dell P166at home and it wouldn't recognize it so I'm sure Dell needs specific memory. But I have several simms in that machine and you're welcome to them if they can work.

Well if it was built in '99 it's most likely PC-100 or PC-133. It could be DDR, but I'm thinking no.

Any way you can get a picture of one of the sticks of RAM that's in there, or get the brand name/model number of the motherboard (should be printed right on it)?

hey justin ive got a 256mb clip of 133mhz ram just sitting here but my computer right now has 256mb clip of DDR ram...obviously i have no clue if it will work or not, any thoughts? If so is it as simple as filling the empty slot with the computer off? Or is there something i have to do afterwords?

A stick of pc-133 won't physically fit into a DDR RAM slot. Sorry buddy....

If you look at the key ways in the slot, there should only be one that's slightly off-center, but there should be two in the pc-133 stick.

sorry man, i forgot about this. I just looked and found 3 pc-100 DIMM chips i have sitting around. One is a 64 meg. The other 2 im not sure of. Either 128's or 64's, but they both are pc-100's. Only way i can telll is to put them in one of my towers and see what they are. i

ts been so long since I was into computers. I used to be able to read the numbers on the chip and tell by that but my brain went to mush.
