cop ticket- opinions please and good story

So- okay- I'm coming home from watching superman from the movie theatre tonight- (good movie btw) with two friends, and we're heading over to ruby tuesdays to get something to eat. So, we're going down route 57 towards ruby and I pull into the parking lot.

A cop pulls up behind me and puts on his lights. Now, I was purposely going slow because of the rain on the ground tonight. So, the officer comes up to my window and says "license, reg, ins"... and I said, "here you go, but out of curiosity why am I getting pulled over?" He says, "I clocked you going at a 53 in a 35." I say, "Sir, there's no way I was going 53 back there- that's crazy. I've driven this road hundreds of times and with the rain 53 in that spot would be crazy." Now, my friends were in the car with me and both of them said that MAX I might have been going 40, but no way in hell was I going anywhere close to 53.

So, the cop says, well- blah blah, and proceeds to ask us what movie we went to, and where we were going. So, then I say, "Sir, I thought you were going to be giving me the ticket for my one light that's out back there." He says, which one's out? I say, "Pass. side."

So, he then proceeds to write me up a 44 dollar ticket for improper maintenance of lights. I ask him what the fine is, and he goes "It's 50- rather than have 4 points on your license son"... and walks back to his car.

Now, when I got home, I took some pictures of my lights, and this is what they looked like. I have a timestamp on my camera- so if I fight this I'm going to need to bring in the camera to the court:

Looks to me like all my lights are working fine, besides the one bulb that is out on the passenger side- but there are still two bulbs that are working fine.

Question- should I fight it?? He gave me this instead of the speeding, but my one friend said the speeding charge was nullified because I didn't get a ticket for it at all, so he has no grounds to say I was speeding at all anymore. What do you guys think?

if you think 3-4 hours waiting in a courtroom to fight a ticket for $44 is worth it. Ya got hosed kid, gotta love cops.

The attitude of the cop and the fact that I was NOT speeding, is worth it enough. It's the principle.

If he didn't ticket me for speeding in the first place, and let me off with it, I don't see how he could bring that up again in a court of law. I wasn't given a ticket for speeding that night- so I'd think that if I WAS speeding, he would've given it to me right then and there, correct? Trust me- this is one cop I could definitely sense was not being nice- he was being a ******** prick.

they can write u up at a later time.its happened to me, had something similar to this happen.i tried to fight it,and ende dup with a reckless driving ticket.instead, its 44$'s no points just pay the dam thing.its sux but,why spend hours in the court room to fight a 44$ ticket that if u dont beat u end up paying like another 100 for court costs(or whatever court costs are)+ the original 44$ ticket

yea.. the question though: how could I NOT beat it? I have pictures and everything- it makes absolutely no sense. And believe it or not- 44bucks is a ****load of money for me right now, considering the expenses of commuting in and out of NYC every day on an intern's pay.

Yea man, its a hellova lot better than getting 4 points on your liscense. Same **** happened to me... the cop that pulled me over saw that I was paying my own insurance, the car was in my name, and I had an absolutely clean record... I was doing 50 in a 35. He walked behind my car before handing me a ticket, kicked my rear bumper a little bit, and said "Here, your liscense plate is dirty, have a good night" A $50 dirty liscense plate ticket is a hellova lot better than 4 points on my liscense IMO. Plus, I dont think it'll show up anywhere if im not mistaken.

I would just pay the ticket and get it over with. maybe what you should do is go to court and pay it, instead of mailing it in or going up to clerks office. By the looks of it, evenif you show the pictures, you still might be at fault because clearly a light is out and the judge would see that.

You got off lucky i think you should just pay the ticket plus i think cop's get 30 day's where they can write you the additional Speeding ticket and just mail it to you.. It doesn't seem like it but i think he was trying to help you out even though it didnt seem like it by giving you the ticket for the light being out..

Just pay the ticket... if it was over $44, Id say fight it. But just pay it and be done with it. If you have one bulb out then technically you cant fight the ticket. Just eat it or your going to make **** worse for yourself.

i wish i was rich so i could just be a dick and go to court and say the cop pulled me over for speeding and i didnt even get a ticket for it. that cop isnt doing his job why does he still have one?
i would pay and not think twice about it. no points, under 50 bucks, just break something in town that you feel is worth 50 bucks to them. that would be another good thing to say to a cop. "write me whatever ticket you want i will just break stuff in your town till i feel i've been reimbursed".

hahahaha... i think I might just do that. Yeah, the cop was a friggin prick, period. No reason to pull me over, no reason to ticket me, all he wanted was 44 bucks. Now- it's off to **** with some mailboxes

Dude, Just think about all the times you broke the law, Speeding, reckless, illegal turns, Burnouts, Sodomy ect. I think you've got away with plenty already.

Although breaking stuff feels good too.......

kevin, since this was over on 57, i'm assuming it was a mansfield/washington twp. cop? If it was hackettstown i would say you could go to court for it, but you won't win in mansfield.

Lesson learned: Never EVER admit guilt of anything to a cop. ever.

if they ask "do you know why i pulled you over?" "no"
if you admit to anything you can't fight it because they are recording the entire conversation from the moment they walk up to the car. One time I had left my license at home and got pulled over, but i know my DL number, when i told him that he told me to tell him, he had no pen or anything, i was waiting for him to get one, he said just say it... he was already recording.
