Cost of college?

I was talking to somebody here at work and the cost of college popped up. Roughly, what does it cost for a year of college tuition today, not taking into account scholarships or going to a state college? I'm almost afraid to hear what it really costs!

I left Slippery Rock in December 2002, and tuition there for out of state students that semester was $18,800

My financial advisor has me saving for a quarter million - thats right, $250k for three kids to go to college (assuming no scholarships)

And no, there's no way in hell we can save that much. So doing what we can.

I graduated from Rowan in '94 and just finished paying off my loans about a year or so ago (what a relief that was). It's gone up quite a bit since then....here's what their tuition and fees are now:

Dam! That's insane. It must take 10 years to get out of debt once you graduate to pay off the student loans. The main reason I was asking is because when I was in college I honestly only found 2 or 3 courses that did anything to help me with my career. I still think on the job experience is worth a lot more than schooling. In school, you can learn the "rules" to how things should be done, but in the business world you can toss 99% of them out. But most employers won't even talk to you without any schooling. My college (RIT) had a lot of community college students who were able to transer 80-90% of their credits towards getting a 4 year degree. That seems to be the only affordable way to get schooling.

That is such crap. The only thing run fiscally worse than a government is an institute of higher learning. There is so much waste it is not even funny. Tuition has always outstripped inflation. Always.

I will start saving for the kids college when they hit elementary. It is going to hurt.

To be honest, thats why Im thinking that when we decide to have kids we might move back to northern virginia. UVA which is probably one of the best ranked (if not #1) public schools in the nation is $10k per year with tuition + room & board for in state students. VA Tech isnt far behind either.

I was looking at some grad school programs, and they were like $30,000-$60,000+, depending upon the school of course. God, just think what it's going to cost in 20 years when we have kids going off to school!

I know Wyo tech was 16k and change. that was without room that was an extra 275 a month for an apartment that they had at the time, This was in Wyoming before they put that huge dorms and main site in laramie. That was for 9 months and the min for 6 months was 14k an change. I know some people that spent nearly 40k for all courses that Wyo tech had to offer. I know Lincoln Tech was about the same but since it is close no room and board.

When I was at TCNJ tuition plus room and board was about $12-$14k a year....thank god for state schools! Not bad for a school ranked in the top 10 for small business schools in the country.

Really? I had no idea UVA was so good. Rankings are interesting. That's not a bad deal at all...I just couldn't ever live in VA unless it was to commute to DC.

Charlottesville (where UVA is) VA is usually ranked in the top 5 places to live in the country (yes, I know, more rankings). When school is in session its great but once the students leave its boring as hell. Yeah, UVA is rated great year after year. It is one of the only state schools to ever be considered for entrance into the Ivy League but that will never happen. I moved here from northern VA which is completly different from the rest of the state.

Rutgers was 9k/year tuition last year, probably went up some, but room and board nearly double the cost. Luckily they're extremely helpful with financial aid and stuff. I just got my bill for this year, I'm only paying $1k/semester cause i'm part time.
