Driving up and down 37 reminds me of the border.. Mexicans crossing with a big fence in the middle and the USA is just across the street.
6 lanes a person has to cross and cars doing anywhere from 30-90 mph @ anytime the odds of making it are slim.

They put a fence up on parts of 37 to force people to use the lights, lot of help that was.

they had ben using snow fence - you know, the plastic net-like fencing, until they realized that people could either cut it or walk right over it. in some locations i think they upgraded to chain link fence, but thought about it twice when it restricted emergency crews' access to accidents and other emergencies. they might have chain link up still in some sections, but it doesn't run very long now (if it's still there). people can't stand to walk a few more feet down to the light. out in front of the courthouse in TR, they actually embedded lights in the roadway to alert drivers when someone was in the crosswalk. there are three ways to get across the street there from the parking garage: walk right across the street (ignoring signs stating it was illegal), going to one of the lights and use the crosswalk, or use the hamster crossing (the elevated walkway). too many people got killed walking straight across hte street, so now they've put the responsibility upon the driver. if you approach that crosswalk now, and you don't stop and let someone in the crosswalk cross the street, you get the ticket. the same thing is going to happen out there on 37.

well, i hate to do it, but here's the latest:
	Quote:

		| Deadly Roads: County leads state in fatalities Jim McConville
staff writer for the ocean county reporter

The grim statistics just seem to keep mounting, and last week was no exception. Two more people died on Ocean County roadways.
Ocean County is currently leading the state with 34 traffic fatalities on its roadways, in 32 accidents.

 ...snip...

The fatalities are spread across the county: the highest toll in Toms River, with 11 fatalities, followed by Jackson with four. Fatal accidents have occurred each month so far in 2007.

 ...snip...

An increased county population, driver speeding, roads unable to handle today's traffic demands, alcohol, inattentiveness, sleep depravation and plain driver error are the litany of reasons traffic officials cite as the likely contributing factors [to the deaths].

 ...snip...

...reducing traffic fatalities in the state may involved drivers adopting new behaviors, including driver attentiveness, while on the road.
 | there you have it. ocean county is the worst place to live in the state due to traffic accidents resulting in death. some think it might be as easy to resolve as getting drivers to pay attention more while driving. so, hang up the cell phone, put away that burger and fries, put away the map and the makeup and pay attention while you are driving.
