Take it from me a South Jersey guy. Leave either Early morning Sunday or really late, becuase Sunday traffic is the worst from down there. There are only 3 lights on the entire Parkway and all 3 are in Cape May County , so between that and the 2 lanes it pretty much just sucks.

i left at 2:45...the traffic wasnt bad around the traffic lights....it was up by the atlantic city expressway that was really bad, and then up by the cross island something or other..and then in other random spots where people come to a complete stop for seemingly no reason

its all "August Uglies" that don't know how to merge or drive for that matter .... your best bet is to stay off the parkway on weekends..... I took the back roads on saturday to avoid the AC expressway traffic on the parkway and only took my an extra 15 minutes.... and i avoid Long Beach Island at all costs

yeah, from the raritan south it's pretty much anything goes. right around where i live, exit 80, there is always heavy traffic for some reason. i know going southbound it goes from 5 lanes into 2, but people are aware of this and should be prepared to merge - yet they are completely clueless. northbound in that area actually opens up, but you get people trying to merge onto the parkway at 30 mph. i pass them in the right lane until i get the car up to speed, then i merge in front of them.
and those "seemingly" reasonless stops are in fact caused by the domino effect. one person in the middle, or left, lane will tap their brakes. the person behind them taps their brakes a little bit harder. and, you guessed it, the person behind them hits their brakes a little bit harder, until you have people crawling along or coming to a complete stop. and it all started with a little brake tap. it's true.
