Yep, that pretty much sums it up with one exception. If your car was built in Canada GM Vintage Vehicle services in Oshawa Ontario should have a record of it. I have called about a '70 Chevelle built up there and got a nice packet of info. I think JL8 Jeff has the same type of packet for his '70 SS, and since the 4th Gens were built in Canada I believe their records are up there.
Somebody was hired full-time to scour GM for any type of documentation and spent a few years looking, only to come up with nothing. The thing is that doc is nice to have on a car that you don't have to prove it's authenticity. On an older car that is stripped down to the hulk or a questionable fake crossing the auction block, it is essential to prove that the value is there- or not there in the case of a shady seller with a fake trim tag.
