It appears we have a new neighbor!

The dog was out in the yard just a short while ago barking so I went out to see who she was barking at. Well, she was standing in the middle of the yard barking towards the corner. The neighbors behind us weren't out in their yard but the neighbors on the side were, but she was barking at the other corner. So I walked over to see the big deal was and she was jumping forward barking and then backed up quickly. I heard something on the other side of the fence and assumed it was a cat. Nope it was rustling around too much under the neighbors shed, it must be a ground hog! Nope, it had a nice white racing stripe as I was standing about 5 feet away from it and that's all I needed to see! I took off across the yard and the dog thought I was playing and chased me down! Unfortunately, she stepped on my foot and one of her nails is really, really sharp and shredded my toe! Time to let our neighbor know he has a skunk living under his shed before he has people over to use the pool! I think the dog will be staying in the house for now as well. And I need to figure out how to stop this toe from bleeding!

That was a close one! We used to have quite a few around here. We used to have to do a "skunk check" (shine a handheld spotlight around the property) before I let the dogs out at night. We had one close call before we adopted our second two, but thank God I saw it before Lily did or we would've had one stinky dog! They seam to have migrated away, though (knock on wood).

Our previous dog got sprayed one night in the back yard. I think the skunk was under our shed. That made for a miserable 2-3 months! I've had skunks standing at my front door and our dog was noticing something so I looked out and and whoa! We had the screen in at the time and the inside door was open so if it had let loose, it would've come right in the house! I don't think she'll be going back out tonight. I'd rather clean up an accident then have to deal with a smelly dog the rest of the summer.

Discovered a new neighbor myself last week. While I was changing the oil in the car, my wife was chasing our little guy into the backyard when I heard her yell: "BEAR!" We scrambled into the house in time to watch the bear make his way through our yard. Only a cub, but where there's a cub, mamma's not too far away. I've seen him once since then; I think he's taking up residence behind my house.

Jeff I would try to get that skunk taken care of because its gonna be more of a pain than anything else. We have them around here but the cats chase them away before they get close to the back yard and Tonka takes care of them. He did get to take a chunk out of the ground hog that was in the back yard before it went under the fence...and the ground hog had a big head start
