Used oil and anitfreeze haz-mat disposal?

I have several gallons of old fluids. For the most part, they are not separate though. I could probably drain most of the oil off the antifreeze, but it also has trans fluid, power steering, etc.

Where can I take this stuff to dispose of it legally?

I think I have 20-30 gallons total.

I think I remember hearing autozone takes old oil but I assume thats pure oil and not contaminated mix. At my old shop we always had to keep used oil and antifreeze separate for when the guy came to take them away.

I was thinking I could just get one large barrel like 25gallon, pour everything in it, and take it to one main location and they can process it. I am willing to pay a few bucks as well, doesn't have to be free.

edit: I found that there is a haz-mat collection day at Bergen Community College in Paramus in April(the march one is on a day I already have plans). I'd just have to swap stuff over to smaller containers(max 5 gallons) and try to separate it some. However i'd rather just get rid of it all at once as is.

You are correct. Parts places just take oil, not AF or a mix.

The only place I know that takes anti-freeze is down the shore (since they don't want people dumping it in the sewers). Seaside Park public works.

I am stuck with a few gallons of it myself.

I just emailed a waste collection company. they say on their site they will come out for 5-5000 gallons. I told them about the mix and asked what to do. Even if it costs 100 bucks, I don't care, i just want all this stuff gone the right way, hence the reason Ive been stockpiling it. lol.

the county collection website says the place wont take unlabeled stuff so that means Id have to pour the oil back in oil gallon containers I guess. Right now its all in 5 gallon lowes/homedepot buckets.

that is kind of ridiculous you have that much crap laying around in 5 gallon buckets. why is it mixed?

the guy at advance told me they will take antifreeze and oil. my town takes oil for free too. i put all 'oil' those bottles - brake fluid, atf, etc. not gasoline.

I store used oil in gallon bottles, like apple juice bottles, and I keep them in a milk crate. I do not want that much crud laying around so it makes me get rid of it in a timely fashion.

Honestly, its mainly from engine removals where motors have been blown or accident cars that were just a mess and a drip pan underneath during disassembly would just catch all types of fluids. (keep in mind I parted over 60 vehicles) Since it wasn't clean, there wasn't really I place i had found to get rid of it. Then I left for the Army, now I'm realizing I still have all this.

you might want to try running under the radar, I doubt you are zoned for auto dismantling. The wrong call even to a private place might put you on someones radar, they might have some kind of stupid reporting requirement.

That's a really good point. I wonder if a take-away place would have DEP reporting rules and such.

Have any friends that work in a garage or a dealership? We have a 500 gallon tank for used oil and a 50 gallon drum for used antifreeze. Lorco picks up our used stuff and they give a check to my boss.

While that is a LOT, it really wouldn't be something that I would worry about. If I kept all the coolant and oil I have changed in vehicles over the years I would have at least that much.

			This might help you.
http://www.bcua.org/files/2012/hhw%202013%20flyer.for%20website.pdf
Says you can pretty much get rid of all the stuff you mentioned for free with a Bergen County ID, which I think you are right?

I have a few options so far.
And I don't dismantle anymore, just now trying to clean up and clear out.

I never had a problem with Pep boys taking a mix. The oil goes to a recycling center where it is separated and taken care of the correct way. Well that is what the service writer dude told me when I left several gallons of head gasket milky oil /coolant a while back. They only take up to 5 gallons a visit I was told last time I made a deposit think I have 5+ gallons waiting to be recycled myself in the garage now.

I am just passing on info I was told so if I am incorrect please correct me on this.

Don't do this, unless you want to potentially tear up your injection pump and injectors. The USED oil has more contaminants and particulates in it than you realize, especially if the oil is coming from blown up wrecks. The work to remove the water/antifreeze and foreign particulate matter (bearing material and other metals) far outweighs any potential benefit. It sounds good on first pass, but its not worth the risk to your injection pump and injectors. If you wouldn't run used oil in the engine, why run it in the fuel system? I wouldn't run my own used oil in my 12V Cummins, let alone from someone else's blown up junk. Even 30 gallons of used oil is only 1 fill up, so $120 saved? Injection pump $2000, just saying......

Was going to make same suggestion, most will have oil and trans fluid. Since you not suppose to be running antifreeze they don't have one designated as such, might have a ? Drum for a catchall.

well, I finally got around to pulling all the buckets out to the driveway and opening them up. i started with 6. I managed to consolidate them down to 4. all the oil/antifreeze mixes really had separated and were fairly easy to pour into different containers. Now I have 3 5gallon buckets of just used oil(trans fluid too but its all mixed and you cant tell plus that's fine) and one 5 gallon bucket of antifreeze. The antifreeze has maybe 4-5 little drops of oil floating around on the top but that's it.
I had one 15 gallon bucket I had outside which I thought was a mix of everything but turned out it was just left over granulated pool chlorine that the top had cracked and allowed water in to dissolve and dilute it. There was no smell of chlorine anymore either that's how diluted it had become, but just the the sake of it, i poured it in my pool. lol. I did come across 4 containers ( 1 gallon and 3 pint containers of unknown chemicals/liquids. I put those bottles in a bigger sealed container in case they leak, and ill deal with them another time.

So in the end, I shouldn't have a big issue getting rid of the oil/antifreeze.

I am in monmouth co and the county hazmat place is in tinton falls. I once had a small load that had individual containers of brake fluid, oil, trans fluid, all nicely labeled. I watched them open them and pour them in the same large tank.
