Youll never make enough power to need a 2 bolt block, why waste your time?

prolly because it isn't a matter of power that breaks 400 4bolt blocks, it is a matter of a design flaw that lets many crack, even in stock form.

Itll never even run, let alone run enough to crack. And the more power, the more prone to cracking its gonna be. Ive rarely ever seen a stock motor with cracked webbing.

so is a 400 2 bolt better then a 4 bolt? the 4 bolt were truck motors the car ones were 2 bolt?
whats this design flaw? i plan on doing a 400 block once i get a block...

because of the larger bore of the 400 SBC there is less material in the webbing around a few of the main caps. with a 2bolt there is plenty of material to get a strong grip, with a 4bolt the outer bolt holes don't have enough material around them to be as strong. the issue can be resolved by installing splayed caps and doing som efill welding on the original holes, but that is more work and machine shop time, so most people jsut look for the 2bolt block.

wayfast, if I were in your position I would build up a 383 instead. You'll save some money going that route because you'd be buying a 350 block (very common) and you wouldnt have to worry about the block cracking as easily. that just my thoughts on the matter.
