Chances are it was a misfire code that cleared itself out. Your PCM will do that after a number of starts or an amount of runtime, I forget which.

A code will still show up in the PCM's history.

true, but if he simply turns the key on without starting the car, the check engine light should be illuminated.

My car will occasionaly throw an ABS INOP /TCS light when im driving through heavy rain. I think it has to do with water getting on the actual sensor.

And Vitals, there really aren't many Autozones locally to us that are easy to get to, They are kinda out of the way most of the time.

Maybe I am wrong, I dunno. My bro he had a misfire in his '99 T/A which cleared itself and the light went out entirely. Wouldn't turn on at key-on, but stored it in the code history. I get the same behavior in my GTP.

maybe late fourth gens are different?
every OBDII car I've ever dealt with would keep the ses light on with the key on engine off.

yeah mine does that as well. with the key on with the engine not running, the ses light should be on. thats a way of telling you the system is functioning

Did you find out whats wrong here? It happened to me today. I was on my way to the doc's and hit a huge puddle in the middle of my lane at 35mph (the kind that makes a loud noise and brings your car to an almost complete stop) ... as soon as that happened, my car BOGGED right down and the SES light began to flash. So I pulled over to the side of the road, turned the car off for 2 minutes... I start it up and it seemed fine... then immediately when I started going up a hill, the light started flashing again and bogged right down... I eventually had to manually put the car in 1st gear to get it up the hill. I let the car sit for about 15 minutes running and sitting before I went on my way... the light hasnt flashed for about 30 minutes, but I still feel a little loss of power.

if the ses light flashes, that means its something serious that can possibly damage your engine. it was probably a misfire.
