So has anyone heard about the excitement at Montclair State University today? I had class and I needed my student id to enter the campus, and there were about 200 cops with what looked like MP5's walking the campus. Half of the upper lot was blocked off and filled with emergency response vehicles and such. From what i heard there was note left for something about a shooting or something, not too sure. I didnt stick around too much longer after i handed in my term paper...didnt want to get caught up in that mess.

Montclair State University heightened security and canceled all public events today due to a note that threatened a shooting on campus on April 10, university officials announced.
Officials said the note was written on a desk in Room 276 of Dickson Hall sometime between April 3 and 7. They said an investigation - including interviews with more than 300 faculty, staff and students - had yet to find any evidence the threat was credible.

But extensive precautions have been in place on the 17,000-student campus, where more than 120 officers were present today - 30 from the MSU Police Department and the balance from law enforcement agencies from throughout the region.

Numerous scheduled events were canceled, including lectures, workshops, athletic events, conferences and performances involving many hundreds of people, according to the university.

The events were cancelled to allow University Police to coordinate a massive precautionary operation, and to minimize the presence of individuals less familiar to the community and less knowledgeable about the campus, officials said.

According to an alert posted on the university's website, President Susan Cole decided to keep the University functioning as normally as possible because the investigation found no evidence to support the threat.

The university also sent a message to would-be pranksters: "It is in the best overall interests of our students and campus community not to give any single immature or disgruntled individual the power to shut down New Jersey's second largest university at any time with a single communication."

Officials ask that suspicious activity be reported to any of the officers posted by all buildings and throughout the campus - or by calling University Police at (973) 655-5222.

Im not cop bashing (theres my disclaimer) , but isnt it funy how 200 cops show up after the fact? In less than 2 weeks MSU will be back to its usual state.
I remember my ex -gf getting almost purse snatched(failed attempt) in the gsp parking lot .. b4 they added best buy's new building. Not a rent a cop or or county/paramus cop anywheres.

I realize certain things are reactive situations as far as law enforcement is concerned , but I laugh inside at the overkill and futility of it sometimes.

This cause of a lack of community policing. Most policing nowadays is reactive instead of proactive. Community policing started to fade when they started using cars, cause cops no longer intergrated with the community and it got worse with the invention of am/fm radios and air conditions cause windows went up and radios went on.

Their trying to bring back community policing now though hence the use of bicycle cops, foot patrol, officers on horses, etc. People have such a bad perception of cops because everyone is so used to them showing up when something bad happens or you get caught doing something bad. People forget cops are averages joes too and generally nice people.

imo cops cant be everywhere all the time, thats just insanely expensive and just overkill sometimes. but the note at msu, i dont see why they wouldnt take it seriously considering all the violence lately at college campus'. heh, at least our tax dollars are doing something haha.
