State Cracks Down on Gas Stations For Price Discrepancies, Inaccurate Pumps

As gas prices soar, you may not be getting what you pay for, even as you
pay more and more.


State authorities on Thursday announced 350 gas stations were fined out of
1,023 stations that were inspected during a recent three-day operation in
all 21 counties.
The most common violation (62) found by inspection teams was inaccurately
calibrated pumps which dispensed fewer gallons into a driver's tank than
the amount the customer paid for.


Weights and measures inspectors also discovered pricing discrepancies and
inaccurate octane ratings.
Sate Attorney General Anne Milgram calls the investigation "deeply
troubling," but conceded there is no way for a consumer to determine if
he's getting less gas than what his receipt shows.
"What they're going to have to know is that we're out there doing it for
them. To me, it is critically important the state and the counties play
this role," said Milgram at a press conference at a West Orange gas
station.
She encouraged customers to get out of their cars when they get gas to make
sure they get the octane they requested and to verify if prices are
properly posted.
If you spot something wrong at a gas station, like the prices being changed
more than once per day, you are encouraged to call the state at
732-815-4840.

haven't been to one. some of this stuff could be totally ridiculous infractions. like being 1 thousandth off per gallon. or octane rating being a hundredth higher or lower than it should be. its really not like most of these guys are trying to scam you, could be faulty equipment. weights and measures do this crap once a year, every year. its nothing new, everyone is getting their panties in a knot cuz gas is expensive. bleh...

Whats funny is that my mom fills up at either two gas stations depending on what direction she is coming home. One of them which was on this list, one of which is not on this list. She goes to me just the other night that she has noticed that if she fills up her tank (she always fills up at about the same time) at the station that isnt on the list she can go alot further per tank. If she fills up at the one on the list she has to fill up alot sooner. Come to find out she may have been right!

You know...now that Im thinking about it...someone filled me with 23.2 gallons of gas last week.
If thats teh case, then my gas tank has enlarged by 1.2 gallons since 1993.

There's been more recent reports today that many of the stations on the list were fined for minor infractions that do not include cheating the consumers. Some were actually fined for giving consumers more fuel than they paid for.

You can't trust everything that comes out of NJ's AG office because it is historically a farce to begin with. Anne Milgram (and her team of 1000+ lawyers who no one can figure out exactly what it is they actually do) is no better than any of her sorry predecessors.
