3rd Gen, 17"s in front 18"s in back???

Guys/Gals,

I am thinking about getting some Boyd Coddington (Magnetos) for my 84 Z28. The only thing is, I am thinking about going with 17"s for the front and 18"s in the back. They are 17"x7 and 18"x7. Do you guys think it would look ok? Here is a link to what the rims look like. http://www.billetwheel.com/cgi/galle...ion&img=3&tn=1

This is what my car looks like. I am putting an IROC Front bumper cover on it, SS hood, and getting it re-painted Red. So the last thing I need to decide on is what to do for rims.

I would go with one size on all 4 to me f bodies dont look quite as good as for example vettes with the staggered wheel setup but the wheels look good

That is kind of what I thought, i just found a cheaper set of 4 that were 17 and 18. I have never really seen a 3rd gen with the staggered wheels, so I really didn't know what to expect.. I guess there is a reason for that.

You could do it, but it comes down to two things in my opinion that really throw it off. You'll have to get lets say a 40 series tire up front for a 17, and a 35 for an 18, causing the front wheel to show more "rubber" then the rear wheel. Also on F-bodies our front wheel wells are larger then the rear that would require a decent amount of lowering to compensate.

The whole front wheel well issue drives my obsession with lowering

I would stick with one size all around and a pro-kit to fix the front wheel gap

i agree, stick with one size. Any reason for 7" wide? why not go larger in the rear, and 8's fit the front perfectly

The only reason I was going to go with 7" wide was because I found a brand new set of these for 800, but I since have decided that I will just custom order them and get 18x8 for the front and 18x10 in the rear. The only thing is, I don't want them to rub up front when I turn. The 16's on there now already rub

I am actually not sure right now, I will have to take a look when I get home. I just know that since I replaced much of my suspension up front (Pitman arm {center link}, tie rods, lower ball joints) because my stearing was loose, my tires rub like hell now, because there is not as much slack as there was before. I'm sure that the rims have a lot to do with it, they may be too wide, or the offset is just too much.

Yeah, what i really want is a nice looking rim that doesn't rub when i turn the wheel slightly in either direction..

Too bad you bought a 3rd gen, lol. They rubbed from the factory.

ugh. sorry but that whole idea sounds terrible to me. Staggered diameter wheels on an f-body AND theyre Boyd Coddington wheels. ahhh.

I think you can do better with your money for wheels. Plus the Boyds are overpriced for what they are and they are polished aluminum and hard to keep clean. ROH make some quality wheels for 3rd gens. I think you would want at least an 8' wide wheel all around. I say keep searching and make the best choice after that.

i have 18x8's with 245/40/18 on the front and they dont rub at all, lock to lock

i like staggered wheels...on my car . do what you want but i think 17's is plenty for a 3rd gen. and a little drop!

I hear ya, but i am pretty picky when it comes to rims. i don't want anything to busy or flashy. i really want the Boyd Coddington "Signature Hot Rod" rims, but i can't find them anywhere right now. the Magneato's are the closest ones. the set should run about 1300, so i don't think that is too bad.

I think they will with a 6" backspace. At least that is what I have seen on other forums.
